Road Safety

WOW Walk to School Challenge

As a school, we take part in the WOW Walk to School Challenge. We recognise the benefits of walking help us feel better as we are exercising and enjoying the fresh air and we also recognise that by walking, we help reduce congestion on the roads around school and air pollution.

Children self report each day how they have travelled to school and at the end of the month, if they have reported walking, scooting, or cycling to school at least once each week in the month, they receive a WOW badge. Each month there is a different badge - all made from recycled materials. We recognise that for some families it is not practical to walk to school, so for these families, if they are able to park at least a 10 minute walk from school, they report as travelling by 'park and stride', and this counts as a walk to school as this too has helped reduce traffic congestion around the school.

We have pupils in school who are WOW ambassadors. Their role is to promote and lead this initiative as well as support younger classes in reporting their means of travelling to school.

Junior Safety Officers

We have two Year 6 representatives as Junior Safety Officers, promoting awareness and delivering important road safety messages to the whole school community in a fun and innovative way.

Our Junior Safety Officers, Parents and school have constructed a Safe Parking Charter. They want everyone who drives to Hoole Church of England Primary School to sign up for the following Parking Charter to help keep all of us safe. Please read the Parking Charter below for more information.

In 2022, we were awarded the Green level Modeshift Stars Award from the National Schools Travel Award Scheme in recognition of efforts to increase levels of walking, cycling and other forms of sustainable travel. Over recent months, the school has developed an approved travel plan as well as investing in facilities including new bike and scooter storage facilities. Our Year 6 pupils undertake Level 1 and 2 Bikeability training each year.

Our Junior Safety Officers this year are Daryna and Elin from Year 6. Every month they share with the school family different ideas on how to stay safe, at home, outside and online. They also run competitions to promote staying safe. The first competition this year was entitled 'Be Safe, Be Seen' and reminded the children how to stay safe in the Autumn as the nights are getting darker earlier.

Bikeability

Bikeright visit us every year to carry out level 1 and 2 Bikeability training with our year 6 classes. This provides them with the skills to travel to school on their bikes safely and sensibly. The children spend a morning learning practical skills in the playground before taking their newly gained confidence and skills onto the local quiet roads. Our Reception classes also complete balance bike training, enabling them to gain key skills in a traffic-free environment.
